Do you remember double art on a Friday? I do. It was magical. The opportunity to spend half an afternoon before the weekend in some kind of wonderful world of zen; colouring, painting, modelling clay. It was the perfect start to the weekend. A treat! A welcome break from Monday’s double physics and Wednesday morning’s double whammy of maths and chemistry.
Well, I have the culinary equivalent for you in McCain ‘Fries-day‘. This is the day for the kids to take control of the kitchen, to ditch the meal planner and let them make (with a little supervision of course) their favourite meal for the whole family to enjoy, and kick off the weekend in style. My boys all love a traditional pizza with fries, but helping them make yeasted dough after school is a bit of a step too far. Instead we came up with these tortilla pizzas, which everyone enjoys just as much. In fact I think they might enjoy them more as the prep is less fiddly and they all enjoy rolling their sleeves up and helping with making dinner.
Of course you can serve the tortilla pizzas alone, but the McCain Crispy French Fries really elevate this meal from a Tuesday tea to a ‘Fries-day‘ start to a great weekend. And we always serve carrot sticks, cucumber sticks and whatever other veggies I can find to add balance.
Do your kids have a favourite #Friesday tea? Let the kids take the reins in the kitchen this #Friesday by putting down your apron and letting them make tea for everyone to enjoy. Let us know by tagging @McCainUK and using the #Friesday hashtag on social media.
McCain Crispy French Fries are available from the following stores: Tesco – 1.4kg, £2.00 (current offer, previously £2.80), Tesco – 900g, £2.00 and Waitrose – 900g, £2.00.
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 16 minutes
Yield: Serves a family of 4, but scale up or down accordingly
- 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes
- 2 tbsp tomato puree
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp freshly milled black pepper
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed
- 1 tsp sugar
- 350g McCain Crispy French Fries
- 4 tortilla wraps
- 3 x 150g balls mozzarella, drained
Make the pizza sauce by mixing together the tomatoes, puree, salt, pepper, olive oil, garlic and sugar in a small saucepan and gently heating for 20 minutes until the sauce has reduced. You can use this in its chunky form or blitz in a liquidiser/food processor until smooth. Preheat the oven to 230°C/Fan 220°C/Gas Mark 8. Place the McCain Crispy French Fries onto a baking tray in one even layer and bake in the oven for between 14 – 16 minutes, turning occasionally until crisp and light golden. Place the plain tortilla wraps onto baking trays and bake at the same time as the fries, for about 3 minutes, until the wrap has started to crisp a little. Remove from the oven and turn the tortillas over. Add a smear of the homemade tomato sauce (any more will result in a soggy pizza) and then use scissors to cut the mozzarella into thin strips. Add these to the top and return to the oven. Remove the pizzas when the mozzarella is golden and bubbling and the edges of the pizza are starting to brown and crisp, this should only take 3 – 4 minutes. Serve the pizza and fries with carrot sticks, cucumber sticks and any other salad vegetables you have in the fridge.
